The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is an initiative by the Ministry of Skill Development (MSDE), Government of India to promote apprenticeship training.
1. Objectives of NAPS
Develop a skilled workforce by promoting on-the-job
experiential training.
Encourage establishments to enroll apprentices by
sharing partial stipend support.
Provide upskilling opportunities for candidates who
have undergone short-term skill training offered by various
Central and State Government initiatives.
Encourage enrolment of apprentices in small
establishments, especially Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and
those located in underserved areas such as aspirational districts and the
North-East Region.
2. Apprenticeship Training
Training is imparted in Designated Trades (DT) and
Optional Trades (OT).
DT includes trades or occupations in engineering,
non-engineering, technology, or vocational courses notified by the Central
Government.
Duration of apprenticeship training in DT for
Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) pass-out candidates is ordinarily one
year.
Duration of apprenticeship training in DT for
fresher/non-ITI pass-out candidates is ordinarily two years.
Optional trades include trades or occupations
determined by the employer.
Duration of apprenticeship training for optional
trades can be six months, nine months, or twelve months.
In certain cases, the duration can exceed one year,
subject to approval from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
(MSDE).
3. Eligibility
Minimum age for an apprentice is 14 years (18 years
for designated trades related to hazardous industries).
Apprenticeship training serves as a transition from
academia to the workplace, and to avail partial stipend support from the
Government, the upper age limit at the time of registration should be 35 years.
NAPS provides a robust platform for apprentices to
gain practical knowledge and contribute to the nation's workforce.
